Hello, Kitty?

May 20, 2008

By Lee Vander Boegh –

I’m thinking of traveling to Japan, because there’s a very real chance that I’ll be greeted off the plane by a cartoon cat. Turns out the Land of the Rising Sun, home to tough-guy ninjas and boring economy cars recently named Hello Kitty as its tourism ambassador.

According to MSNBC (read it here), “Officials hope that tapping into that fan base will lead to a bigger flow of tourists into Japan, and closer toward their goal of attracting 10 million overseas visitors every year under the ‘Visit Japan’ campaign.”

Ten million visitors per year?Do they even have cats in Japan? I mean, most cats only give me the time of day when they’re hungry or want clean litter. The last time my cat, Fred, greeted me at the door was because he peed on my bed and was trying to butter me up.

In summary, visit Japan. But if you’re met by a giant feline, be wary; he probably peed in your hotel.
